List three ways:
Websites - Websites is without a doubt the best way of creating a name for yourself and work. It showcases all your work on a layout which you created yourself, so not only are you showing other works you've done. But you're also using Flash/HTML/Dreamweaver or whatever program you're using to show you understand the program appropriately.
You can also use other people/companies websites to promote yourself if you don't have a website of your own just yet, like for an example, Deviant Art is a huge place for people to publicly post their works, which can either be sold or just simply a safe place for your online portfolio work.
Billboards/Posters/Business cards - This can be used quite often for promotion of work, but of course you'll need the money to afford rental of billboards and money for paper to print on, and maybe even printing ink for the printers. I found out that business cards were actually very high demanding and many companies make lots of money off people buying a certain amount of custom made business cards for a good deal.
Posting - By posting your work on Design Inspiration websites you'll find that eventually you'll get your name out as an artist. But obviously you'll need the work to back it up, so be careful what you post and how much you design.
